Sr. Janice Wheaton, CSJ, entered eternal life May 1 at the age of 101.
Pearl Wheaton was born in Detroit on Jan. 11, 1915, the daughter of Pearl and Elizabeth (Bock) Wheaton. She was a member of St. Bernard Parish in Detroit at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on Jan. 6, 1933. She received the name Sr. Janice at her reception Aug. 25, 1933. She pronounced first vows Aug. 26, 1935, and final vows Aug. 26, 1938.
Sr. Wheaton earned degrees from Nazareth College and the University of Notre Dame before teaching for 29 years in schools of the congregation, including: St. Philip Neri, St. Rita and St. David in Detroit; and St. John Vianney in Flint. She served as a school counselor in Florida, Kalamazoo and Flint. In 1969, she became director of career planning and placement at St. Mary College, Notre Dame. She later worked as an advocate in the marriage tribunal offices in the Lansing and Marquette dioceses until moving to Nazareth in 1985 to serve as secretary in the SSJ administrative and worship offices.
Mass of Christian burial was celebrated May 3 at Holy Family Chapel in Nazareth.
